Even with rigorous cleaning regimes in place, it has been proven that admission to a room previously occupied by a patient infected by MRSA, VRE, or C. difficile is a significant risk factor for the next patient occupying that room to develop an infection or colonisation.

Infection Prevention has often focused on improving disinfection for high-touch surfaces (like bed rails and tables), further research has also implicated portable and shared equipment such as wheelchairs, trolleys, toilets, bed curtains, as key sources of transmission.

Contaminated surfaces obviously contribute to a large % to the transmission of healthcare-associated infections, and improved cleaning and disinfection can reduce this transmission. Sadly, some cleaning staff are under huge pressure and workload, and it has been shown that sometimes less than 50% of surfaces were being sufficiently cleaned.

That’s where antimicrobial coatings can prove their worth, time and again. They constantly inhibit the ability of micro-organisms to grow on treated surfaces, thus maintaining maximum hygiene, but considerably reducing the risk of cross-contamination.
